The Carbon Literacy Community Pot
Always wanted to deliver training to a specific group but lacking in funding to make this happen?
We are introducing our Community Pot (CP) so that trainers can increase accessibility to their Carbon Literacy® training and deliver to groups who have historically found it difficult to access funding to become certified.
A specific fund has been created with contributions from organisations that have paid enhanced rates for Certificate Applications. We hope this will help us to extend our reach and empower a more diverse range of learners with Carbon Literacy, promoting climate action for everyone.
Get involved with our Community Pot pilot!
Before we launch, we want to pilot the Community Pot with our Trainer Network to refine the process among an audience already familiar with Carbon Literacy. By taking part in the application process, you have the chance not only to receive free services to support your work as Trainers, but to help support the communities that benefit from future funding rounds. Additionally, your feedback would provide valuable input to improve the application process.
Being part of our Community Pot pilot cohort will also lead to comms and media amplification on our social networks and pioneers’ events. Whether you are a freelance trainer or working for an organisation, we want to shout about your fantastic work!

What is on offer?
We will be distributing the equivalent of £6,000 as free Carbon Literacy services (including Certificate Applications and Criteria Checking costs associated with accrediting a new course), to around 4-6 UK-based community groups. We expect that each successful initiative will receive roughly 90-150 Certificate Applications to support their CL initiative.
Many of you will be familiar with the process of developing a Carbon Literacy course. To ease this process for Community Pot recipients, on top of our free course kit, we will also be offering free access to relevant Toolkits for the delivery of community training.
Community Pot recipients will also be given the opportunity to share the courses created with recipients of future funding rounds. Developing the pool of resources available to future recipients is a great way to support the amazing work we envision the Community Pot will fund. This will be a huge help to groups globally for whom the process of course creation is itself a barrier to initiating training.
Who can apply?
The purpose of our Community Pot is to support the take-up of Carbon Literacy amongst communities and groups who would otherwise struggle to access or afford the cost of services associated with initiating training by reducing the associated financial and time constraints.
With this in mind, our target audience for the pilot funding cycle is:
- UK-based groups
- Small community groups with limited or no funds
- Charities in the sub £25k tier of the price matrix
- Other underrepresented groups
How to apply
Applications for the pilot round of funding open on Monday 12th February 2024 at 9am and will close on Wednesday 10th April 2024 at 2pm.
Please note that only existing Carbon Literacy trainers can apply during this pilot stage.

By teaching about Climate Change in lessons I feel like we are helping to save the world in a small way. I am very proud that a lot of pupils gained the Carbon Literacy award. I know that there are many, many more of our pupils who are capable of this now. They are confident enough to talk about the science of Climate Change and how to stop it increasing. These pupils now have the confidence to teach others about Global Warming and Climate Change. They have taught parents, pupils, outside agency and schools in other countries.
