Carbon Literacy Resources
Welcome to our Resources pages. These pages lay out a wealth of resources for you to use in advocating, communicating and delivering the key messages of Carbon Literacy.
Carbon Literacy is being delivered by scores of people and organisations working in partnership with the project including schools, employers, universities, community groups, hospitals, individual trainers and charities. To that end, we want to be able to help our partners deliver the best training that they can and support this by making as many resources available to our partners as possible.
Resources range from “starters for ten” to help you communicate to non-expert audiences or advocate for a project internally to the detailed information, exercises and resources to support you in developing your training response and help you deliver Carbon Literacy to your audience.
Getting started
We have organised information so that you can use it in various ways. The sections below should be self-explanatory, but drop a mail to info@carbonliteracy.com if all is not clear or you have any specific queries or resources we can add.
We are well aware that there is still more we can do to make this information more useful and accessible and we intend to continue to develop our resources, however generally we think it is better to share some of what we’ve got so that it can help you right now and then improve it as we go along.
We hope you find these resources useful and they support you in participating in The Carbon Literacy Project.
E-Learning
CL: Knowledge e-learning can be used in conjunction with, or independent to an accredited CL course.
Because of the requirement to work with others, a learner cannot currently become fully Carbon Literate through online learning alone, but completion of the e-learning course generates a CL: Knowledge interim certificate, with the learner being approximately half-way through their “days worth” of training to become Carbon Literate.
The Carbon Literacy Course Kit
As of October 2017, we will be providing up-to-date resources in the form of the Carbon Literacy Course Kit, that will be updated regularly and downloaded here:
- Think of this Course Kit as a ‘skeleton course’ that will help you with the framework for your Carbon Literacy training materials.
- There are some key ingredients that we have structured to help you. These include some of the aspects of climate change science, what’s happening to our planet, why taking action is important, and how we can motivate others to take action.
- There are also some key ingredients that you will need to create yourself. This is because your course has to be relevant to your audience.
Our Resource Library
Over the course of The Project, we have come across a mass of different resources that could aid in the communication of Carbon Literacy. The challenge is how to organise these so that they are reasonably easy to navigate meaningfully for most users, and at the same time allow you to find something you need quickly.
We have responded to this challenge by organising web-based resources in three different ways:
The Carbon Literacy Standard “Section by Section” Structure
These resources are organised in exactly the same way as the Carbon Literacy Standard. If you are struggling to explain or demonstrate [or meet the requirements of] a particular section of the Standard (when completing your Criteria Checker for example) simply find the corresponding section of the Resources and click through. The “Training Day” Structure
Resources organised according to the structure of a typical training day. We have organised the Resources this way to help Carbon Literacy trainers and anyone else structuring a training initiative to find resources to support their activities for a particular section of the course – such as icebreakers or exercises to keep participants involved after lunch etc. Simply find the correspon

The Audience Structure
We talk often about the three audiences for Carbon Literacy – those who live, those who work, and those who study. Some resources are particularly relevant to a business, but much less so to a community group, so in this structure, we have organised our resources so that you can look at what is particularly relevant to the audience that you are communicating with, without seeing resources of interest to a different audience.
