Putting Carbon Literacy to Work – Lauren Wood

June 2018 by Lauren Wood

I have always been environmentally conscious and wished to have a career in this area. However I currently work as a Recruitment Consultant, which I thought would limit my ability to positively affect the environment, but that was not the case.

It was brought to my attention that there were certain behaviours that were adopted in my organisation that were not environmentally friendly, e.g. how much people printed and how people wouldn’t recycle properly. After a few months, I felt like I was finally in a good position where I could try to implement a ‘Green Scheme’. Thankfully, due to being Carbon Literate, I had all the tools I needed under my belt – from knowing how to approach decision makers, to educating fellow employees correctly so that they can then be environmentally conscious.

As well as this, I’m also a certified Carbon Literacy Trainer, meaning I was confident in discussing the subject of climate and the environment due to delivering Carbon Literacy workshops in the past. As such, I decided to pull a presentation together which looked at the main areas of the business that should be targeted, this consisted of – facts and figures around the issues; implications of these issues; as well as suggestions of how to improve these. Fortunately, the Co-owners of the company highly commended my presentation and will implement most of my suggestions in the next quarter.
